The first two kata that we learn in GKR Karate are known as Taigyoku Shodan and Taigyoku Nidan, but they are more commonly referred to as First and Second kata. What is Kata in Karate? A kata is a Japanese word meaning "form" or "pattern" and refers to a set of predetermined movements that are performed solo in a set sequence. These movements are used to teach karate students the fundamental stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks. GKR's First kata (Taigyoku Shodan) is taken directly from the Shotokan style, which incorporates the long forward stance (zenkutsu-datchi), lunge punch (oi tsuki) and downward block (gedan barai). GKR's Second kata (Taigyoku Nidan) however is completely unique. The Gekisai kata are taught as the first kata in the Goju Ryu Karate syllabus. They were created by Chojun Miyagi Sensei in 1940 as a way of introducing the basic karate forms to a wider audience. Goju-Ryu Gekisai kata.
